My observation is that it handles intermittent connectivity better than a load balancer doing failover between two lines. But ultimately it sounded like a lot of effort and I've kind of reached the limit in terms of how much time I'm willing to invest in "fixing" a pretty buggy connection. Stuff like OpenMTPCprouter appealed to me. And even "flickering" connectivity isn't an issue because the connection is bonded and I guess it can change over the bandwidth that quickly. Failovers are instantaneous (versus about 20 to 30 seconds with the load balancer). The connection is much more seamless than what the load balancer can produce. For the moment I'm bonding the cellular router's WiFi network with the ISP line (directly). As I've already got a dedicated cellular router, I'm going to go ahead and buy an ethernet to USB connector to get it into my desktop as a wired connection. And the "failovers" happen often enough that you actually notice the intermittent connectivity. My guess is that there are tons of events that look like failover but last short enough that the system is confused about which WAN to pull from. The load balancer flips the connection over to the cellular line and nobody even notices (I check the data usage every few days to see where it's actually pulling the connection from).īut where the system struggles mightily? Those "bad internet days" when everybody's home and the ISP line is kind of coming in and out. This happens less often but it does occur. My system works great when my ISP connection goes (fully) down for say an hour. Unfortunately there's one flaw which I hadn't envisioned: I got both running through a TP-Link load balancer and from the LAN side piped off connections to everything in the house.Īs I'd already done a lot of digging into my options (and had come across connection bonding) I also signed up for a month on Speedify just to test it out. To my (crummy) ISP line I added a cellular router.
